Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system.

Demyelination (demyelination, damage to myelin) is the degenerative destruction of the myelin sheaths (membrane structure that spirals around nerve fibers; myelin) of nerve fibers of the central or peripheral nervous system.
In Central Europe, MS is the most common inflammatory disease of the central nervous system. MS mostly occurs in young people (between 20 and 40 years of age), in women twice as often as in men. The word sclerosis refers to scarring. This is how "scars on nerves" develop, preventing them from working properly.
The electrical resistance is reduced by the demarking. Current is lost, which means that more power is needed to depolarize the next nerve cord ring (this is how "control information" is passed on from section to section in nerves). In the case of only slight tissue damage, there is only a delay in the transmission of stimuli.
In severe demyelination, conduction may be completely interrupted.
MS patients may have strange sensations or their movements may become weak or sluggish. Visual disturbances may occur or difficulties in thinking processes.
Symptoms may vary and occur in relapses at different times. Between relapses, patients may feel well again. Unfortunately, multiple sclerosis worsens over a longer period of time. MS is considered an incurable disease. It can cause disability, but life expectancy is usually normal.

Causes of multiple sclerosis (MS)
In particular, malfunctions of the immune system are suspected, i.e. demyelination due to "endogenous attacks". Demyelination results from degenerative or inflammatory processes. In addition, various neurotoxic stresses (caused by toxins that attack nerves in particular) are found in MS patients.
Similarly, a deficiency of vitamins B6 and B12 (typical, for example, in alcohol consumption disorders) may also be causative. Since an increase in vitamin D at low baseline levels in the blood serum reduces the risk of relapses, vitamin D deficiency is also seen as a risk factor. Likewise, a connection with certain infections such as Lyme disease is also observed. Since MS also runs in families, genetic predisposition is also considered a possible cause.

INUSpheresis® as a successful therapy option
INUSpheresis® offers new treatment perspectives for multiple sclerosis, especially when conventional methods are no longer sufficiently effective. The German Multiple Sclerosis Society (DMSG) has published an observational study in which the effectiveness of a therapeutic apharesis procedure was investigated in comparison to the administration of methylprednisolone (cortisone).
