In Alzheimer's disease - also known as Alzheimer's disease - people become increasingly forgetful, confused and disoriented due to the death of nerve cells in the brain.
A combination of genetic and non-genetic factors triggers this as yet incurable brain disorder, in which there is progressive, diffuse atrophy of the cerebral cortex and, later on, of the medulla. The brain mass can shrink by up to 20%.
Women are more frequently affected by Alzheimer's disease. The first symptoms are impaired memory and orientation as well as memory loss. As the disease progresses, thought disorders (e.g., perseveration, i.e., "sticking" to words that no longer make sense in the current context) or the loss of practical skills (apraxia) may develop. On average, the disease continues for eight years, resulting in death.
