Leaky Gut

The term "leaky gut" describes a permeable intestine.

Disease pattern

In medicine, it is not clearly defined whether this refers more to a symptom that can occur with many different diseases or whether it represents a disease in its own right.

In medical research, permeable bowel is more commonly referred to as permeability disorder, barrier disorder or tight junction disorder. In general, permeability describes the permeability of biological cell membranes (the "container" that enclose cells) to other substances. Tight junctions are narrow bands of membrane proteins that completely surround epithelial cells. These are in close contact with the bands of neighboring cells and form a diffusion barrier as an intercellular space that controls the flow of molecules across the epithelium.

In leaky gut syndrome, increased permeability of the junctions of the epithelial cells of the mucosa of the small intestine is observed along with decreased intestinal immunity.

A study of patients with irritable bowel syndrome showed that a wide variety of foods or irritants increase the permeability of the intestinal mucosa. In a permeability disorder, the small intestine loses its selection ability; proteins and other molecules that promote inflammation are more likely to be absorbed and thus enter the blood and lymph circulation in greater numbers.

As a result, the immune system of our organism is increasingly confronted with critical food components, additives, and foreign antigens. Bacteria, molds, and yeasts, as well as their metabolic products, put more strain on our defenses than our body is used to. The diffusion barrier, which in a healthy state also regulates the flow of dissolved amino acids, sugars, fatty acids, and immunoglobulins, is severely disturbed in leaky gut syndrome.

Causes

At present, no precise causes have emerged in research. One suspects above all a multifactorial autoimmune disease.

Various diseases can lead to changes that are currently summarized under the term leaky gut syndrome. Triggers could also be infections, unhealthy diet, stress, or the frequent use of antibiotics.

The example of irritable bowel syndrome illustrates that psychological stress situations in particular trigger a variety of organic reactions in patients, which cause physical changes, such as psychoreactive, functional disorders. Symptoms appear in the affected organ systems, which can impair our health - sometimes severely.

Therapy

INUSpheresis®  for Leaky Gut

The permeable gut increases the exposure to pathogens and toxins. The immune system reacts increasingly with inflammatory and allergic processes. INUSpheresis® is a useful measure to reduce the toxic load on the organism, as the TKM58 membrane has a special, fine pore size and composition to remove pathogenic proteins and protein-bound toxic substances selectively.
