Oxidative stress

Oxidative stress describes the imbalance between free radicals (prooxidants) and radical scavengers (antioxidants) in the body.

Disease pattern

Oxidative stress is a metabolic condition in which the organism is stressed by a high concentration of reactive oxygen-containing molecules (reactive oxygen species, ROS).

ROS are formed when an oxygen molecule accepts additional electrons. It is true that reactive oxygen species also have positive properties; for example, they are involved in the organism in the killing of undesirable microorganisms such as viruses and bacteria. However, due to their reactivity, oxygen species are also harmful to the organism, since a strongly increased formation of oxygen radicals represents a form of inflammatory process.

To protect itself from oxygen species, the organism confronts them with antioxidants. These cause a break in radical chain reactions, since the antioxidants themselves donate an electron, but do not react any further and break down the oxygen species enzymatically.

Oxidative stress occurs when the balance between oxidative and reductive reactions is disturbed and the oxidative processes gain the upper hand. This causes damage to vital cell membranes, enzymes and protein structures (such as our DNA, the genetic material in the cell). Last but not least, this also leads to accelerated cell aging. For example, people with Hutchinson-Gilford syndrome (premature aging) have no protective mechanisms against free radicals.

The attack of free radicals on unsaturated fatty acids in our body contributes to the development of arteriosclerosis. Likewise, oxidative stress is suspected to be involved in the development of cancer, diseases of the immune system and also neurodegenerative diseases.

Causes

Causes of Oxidative Stress

Oxidative stress can have many causes. These include stimulants and addictive substances (e.g. alcohol, drugs and cigarettes), poor nutrition (low in vital substances) and excessive sugar consumption. Physical and psychological stress and diseases associated with sleep deprivation are also considered causes.

But also autoimmune diseases and infections with latent subliminal inflammations are among them. In addition, environmental factors such as UV radiation or blue light (emitted by screens, for example) are also suspected as causative factors. Exhaust fumes and fine dust and especially environmental toxins or chemicals such as pesticides, aggressive solvents or heavy metals also play a major role.

Therapy

INUSpheresis® as preventive environmental apheresis®

Through differentiated blood purification, INUSpheresis® effectively removes dangerous ballast in the long term. Environmental toxins are specifically filtered out. This is the right step towards reducing toxin-induced overload caused by reactive oxygen species.
