Using multiple research platforms, including a machine learning approach, researchers have identified environmental factors that promote gastrointestinal inflammation.
Chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a condition that is becoming increasingly common in industrialized countries, is characterized by chronic gastrointestinal inflammation.
While researchers have identified approximately 200 genetic markers associated with the disease, there is limited understanding of the specific environmental factors that influence the risk and severity of CED (inflammatory bowel disease).
The study uses multiple research platforms to systematically identify environmental chemicals that affect gastrointestinal inflammation. The results identify a common herbicide, propyzamide, that can promote inflammation in the small and large intestines.
The study, conducted by scientists at Brigham and Women's Hospital, a founding member of the Mass General Brigham health system, was also published in the journal Nature.
