Alarming results: Drinking water with PFAS
00/00
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are increasingly polluting drinking water in Switzerland. According to recent reports by French-speaking Swiss television station RTS, PFAS residues can be detected in all regions of Switzerland, posing considerable health and environmental risks.
PFAS, known as "eternal chemicals" due to their longevity and chemical stability, are widely used in industry and consumer goods. They are found, for example, in water-repellent textiles, packaging materials and coatings. The problem is that these substances are hardly degraded and accumulate in the environment and in organisms. Studies classify the substances as toxic to the liver and show a risk to reproduction.
Although there is now awareness of the risks, there are still no laws in Switzerland that regulate PFAS and no solution to filter them out of drinking water.
National Councillor Delphine Klopfenstein-Broggini also comes to this conclusion and calls for action: "This is a ticking time bomb. We need to take the issue very seriously." In order to reduce the use of these products, we need to work together with the federal government and restrict the production of PFAS.
