Climate change and skin cancer risk

Effects of climate change on the skin

Climate change may be contributing to the increasing rates of skin cancer observed worldwide, as ozone depletion continues to expose people to higher levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

"It's important to consider what environmental factors can influence the increased incidence of skin cancer. When you think about the skin, it's really our largest organ and our primary interface with the environment. Therefore, the skin is particularly susceptible to influences - and therefore disease - that may be environmental," said Eva R. Parker, M.D., assistant professor of dermatology at Vanderbilt University.
