Increasing plastic pollution threatens not only the environment, but also our health and the health of future generations.
Microplastics are getting into Swiss waters - that much is certain. But is there also microplastic in our drinking water? After the complex procedure, the machine finds two plastic particles.
Humans are exposed to a variety of toxic chemicals and microplastics throughout the plastic lifecycle through inhalation, ingestion and direct skin contact.
According to WWF, the average person could ingest about 5 grams of plastic each week. While the health effects of plastics are still a relatively new area of research, scientific findings to date indicate that the toxic chemical additives and pollutants contained in plastics threaten human health worldwide.
Many of the toxic chemical additives have several other known health effects, persist in the environment, and accumulate in exposed organisms.
Research has also shown that microplastics can damage our health and act as vessels for pathogens to enter our system and increase the spread of disease.
