A study of more than 1,000 sites in 258 rivers on all seven continents shows that pharmaceutical pollution is a pervasive problem worldwide.
The published work examined sites in 104 countries, including 36 not previously studied, and is the largest and "first truly global" study of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) pollution conducted by the research, according to Global Monitoring.
Concentrations of pharmaceuticals considered unsafe for aquatic organisms were detected at more than a quarter of the sampling sites.
The findings show that "pharmaceutical pollution poses a global threat to the environment and human health," the authors write, "This will only get worse as we increasingly use pharmacological solutions for any illness, physical or mental.
