Titanium dioxide in cosmetics - toothpastes and lipsticks are better avoided

00/00

Titanium dioxide is a controversial ingredient that is banned in food due to its potential health hazards.

However, it is still allowed in cosmetic products, such as toothpaste and lipstick.

The use of titanium dioxide in food has been banned by the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (FSVO) because damage to health from the particles cannot be ruled out.

In cosmetics, titanium dioxide may be used as a colorant, UV filter and in powder form under certain conditions. Scientists repeatedly debate whether nanoparticles of titanium dioxide can enter the bloodstream through the skin.

So far, this is considered unlikely, and mineral sunscreens containing titanium dioxide are considered safe.

Nevertheless, consumers should be careful because titanium dioxide can also be found in toothpaste, hairspray, lipstick or loose powder under the designation CI77891. These products can easily be inhaled or swallowed.

The EU is currently reviewing the safety of titanium dioxide in cosmetics and toothpastes. If the substance is found to be harmful to health, the EU will adapt the law accordingly.

Some retailers and manufacturers are already doing away with titanium dioxide in their products. Migros, for example, no longer uses the substance in children's toothpastes in its own brands, and Aldi no longer buys toothpaste with titanium dioxide.

However, the situation is not yet as promising for lipsticks: in 2021, Stiftung Warentest found titanium dioxide in all 17 rosewood shades tested, and Stiftung Ökotest discovered the substance in 15 of 18 red lipsticks.
