Chronic post-COVID-19 syndrome and chronic fatigue syndrome: Does extracorporeal apheresis play a role?

The symptoms of both diseases can be significantly improved by reducing neurotransmitter receptor autoantibodies.

Abstract

Summary of the study

Many patients infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus complain of persistent shortness of breath and fatigue even months after the onset of the disease. This overwhelming phenomenon is not-well defined and has been termed "post-COVID syndrome" or "long-COVID".

This study examines the similarities with myalgic encephalomyelitis, also known as chronic fatigue syndrome, which is associated with viral and autoimmune pathogenesis. Neurotransmitter receptor antibodies to ß-adrenergic and muscarinic receptors may play a key role in both diseases.

The study found a similar increase in these autoantibodies in both groups of patients. Extracorporeal apheresis using a special filter appears to be effective in significantly reducing these antibodies and significantly improving the debilitating symptoms of patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.
