Abstract

Summary of the study

The COVID-19 pandemic has far-reaching implications for the global health care system, particularly Long-Covid (chronic fatigue and severe malaise), affects millions of people as a post-infectious disease.

In Long Covid patients, therapeutic apheresis has been shown to relieve symptoms.

In this study, we analyzed specific biomarkers in different cohorts of Long Covid patients before and after therapeutic apheresis. The results show that patients who experienced significant improvement after two cycles of therapeutic apheresis had significant reductions in neurotransmitter autoantibodies, lipids, and inflammatory markers.

Interestingly, a 70% reduction in fibrinogen was also observed, and the formation of erythrocyte rolls and fibrin fibers largely disappeared, as confirmed by dark-field microscopy.

These findings are of great importance as they represent the first study to demonstrate a pattern of specific biomarkers associated with clinical symptoms in long-covid patients. They provide a valuable basis for more objective monitoring and evaluation of treatment outcomes in long-covid and other post-infectious syndromes.

In conclusion, therapeutic apheresis is a promising treatment option for long covid patients and has the potential to improve the quality of life for millions of people worldwide.

This study helps to expand our understanding of Long-Covid and pave the way for future therapies and interventions. As research and clinical trials progress, we can hope to be able to effectively treat this post-infectious disease and help affected patients.
