Summary of the study
Double filtration plasmapheresis (DFPP) can effectively remove unwanted substances from the blood.
In this study, field emission scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray analysis (FE-SEM-EDX) was used to investigate whether the eluate obtained by a particular type of DFPP (INUSpheresis with a TKM58 filter) contains nano- and nano- and microparticles and what the chemical composition of these particles is.
The study was able to identify micro- and nanoparticles of different sizes and chemical compositions, including microparticles with high concentrations of calcium, iron, silicon, aluminum and titanium. Furthermore, thread-like objects were identified.
The study also discusses the possible origin of the particles and objects, their pathophysiological relevance, and the diagnostic and therapeutic potential of FE-REM-EDX analysis of the eluate for environmental medicine applications in patients.
