Do environmental and metabolic factors play a role in predisposing to severe COVID-19 disease?

The influencing factors and measures of European countries in connection with COVID-19 mortality rates.

Abstract

Summary of the study

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic is affecting people worldwide. However, there have been striking differences in the number of people infected and deaths in different countries. Particularly within Central Europe in countries that are similar in ethnicity, age, and medical standards and have taken similar steps toward containment, such differences in mortality rates remain unexplained.

The study suggests environmental factors should be considered and investigated to explain these intriguing variations. Countries and provinces such as northern Italy, France, Spain and the United Kingdom have suffered five times more deaths from coronavirus infection than neighboring countries such as Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Denmark, relative to the size of their respective populations.
